Top Serpae Tetra Facts

Serpae tetra is a popular tropical fish due to its vibrant colors and easy upkeep. It originates from the Amazon Basin, where it inhabits the clearwater streams, lakes, and flooded areas.

  1. Serpae tetras are found in roughly 17 countries in South America and in thousands of aquariums worldwide. They can grow up to around 2.5 centimeters in size.

  2. This species is distinguishable by its bright red and silver biochromes and slightly elongated shape. Its fins are slightly pointed, which can help distinguish it from other reddish-colored tetras.

  3. Serpae tetras prefer to school together, which helps them feel safer since they are shoaling fish. They like to live in densely-packed schools as small as six.

  4. Serpae tetras can lay up to 100 eggs at once, which sink to the bottom of the aquarium and hatch after about 24 to 36 hours.

  5. They are omnivores, so they should be fed a variety of proteins, including small flakes, frozen foods, and live foods like worms.

  6. These fish need plenty of space to swim and be active, so an aquarium of at least 10 gallons should be provided. The aquarium should also have plenty of hiding places to offer safety.

  7. Serpae tetras prefer well-oxygenated water and warm temperatures between 78 to 86 degrees Fahrenheit.

  8. This species is known for its peaceful nature, but care should be taken to choose not overly aggressive or territorial tankmates.

  9. The Serpae tetra can live up to five years in captivity, with optimal diet and water conditions.

  10. These fish prefer a varied aquarium diet, so aquarium diet supplements should be used to vary their diet and help meet their nutritional needs.
